What is a Safe Space?

A children's book about acceptance and understanding
Stevie Bees Author Picture
I know firsthand what it means to feel safe to be me — a millennial autistic trans-masculine non-binary person — and what it looks like to not be safe.

So, I work every day to create safe spaces in the world, and I do it with the help of a gathered community of 30,000 “bees” made up of marginalized people and those who use their privilege to protect them.

WHAT IS A SAFE SPACE? does the vital work of expanding what it means to be supportive and understanding — and supported and understood. It is a radical book for a radical time. It takes bravery to be empathetic in the world today where people in power are not positive role models for our children. This book is a call for courageous kindness.

I am a parent who knows that children’s literature has the true power to change the world. If we can empower each generation to know what it means to accept their own and others’ identities, hear others’ needs and speak their own, respect and hold boundaries, and more, then there is true hope for safe spaces in tomorrow’s world.

A Timeless MasterPiece

Stevie Bees has written a timeless masterpiece, beautifully illustrated by Carrie Schneider. "What is a Safe Space?" is an inspirational look at how we can all be more empathetic and compassionate. This is a book we all need - kids and adults alike - and I can't wait to share it with everyone I know.

Andra Olaveson

I told my mum about your book. It prompted a conversation with her about her desire to BE a safe space for me, and my wife and others.

She spoke about her own limitations as a Christian woman, challenging her conditioning and opening herself to the opportunity to be safe for those she seeks to be.

As a trans man, parent, and parent to a trans kiddo, work like yours is absolutely changing the landscape for us, and for our children.

Just Inspiring

Learn how to better be a safe space for yourself and others, while guiding children with love, empathy, and compassion. The illustrations are stellar (see what I did there?)!

If you have no kids so share it with, consider donating a copy to your local library, or sponsoring someone who couldn't otherwise afford it.

You'll love it, I promise!
